Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on FIRE?
i was adjusting the bias on my amp and i wanted to read the particular plate voltage for my amp because it can vary form amp to amp so a website told me pin three and i touched what i thought was pin three with my radioshack volt meter and got no reading so i felt around on the other pins and when i touched one of them it started to burn in a whitish blueish fire. i immediately shut off the power and the fire stopped but if i try to turn it on it burns more. how did this happen? is it normal to create fire and destruction by simply touching the wrong pin? how can i fix this? (im assuming a home fix isn’t possible i’ll probably send it to the pro tech shop but i think i voided my warranty so i was wondering what tools materials and skills would be needed if i were to attempt this fix.) p.s. if it isnt dangerous and its simply replacing a circuitboard i think i am experienced enough to do it but im assuming not.
You didn’t say where the whitish bluish fire was located. Pin 3 is the plate, which has the high voltage, but when looking at the underside you start with the keyed slot and clount counter-clock to the 3rd pin. If you shorted pin 3 to 2 or 4 for an instant it might start an arc which would damage the bakelite tube socket. You might be able to dig the burned part of the tube socket out, kind of like a dentist removes a cavity in a tooth. That might stop it from arcing. It is still arcs and burns between two of the socket pins, you can replace the whole socket if you know how to solder. If the fire is somewhere else other than between the socket pins you can email me with better detail and I will respond, or send me a close up photo. I spent 35 years repairing tube amps.
ps: Also, you should have a speaker load on the amp. They will arc sometimes if there is no load on them.
