I am buying a semi-hollow electric guitar soon. Any recomendations for under $300?
Right now i’ve got my heart set on an Epiphone Dot Studio Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar. I’ve been playing for about 1 year and i like punk music. Any better guitars that this that are still under $300? Also, is Epiphone is good brand for guitars?
My opinion, friend, is to hang onto that Epiphone Dot and save your cash up. Epiphones are made overseas but are overseen by Gibson, so you’re getting a quality instrument at a good price. I say hang onto your stash (of money) and save up for that more expensive yet durable and better sounding axe down the road.
If you want to have another guitar, for under $300, you can grab a Epiphone Explorer or Les Paul or something of the sort on eBay. You’ll have a near excellent solid body with humbuckers to give you that thick tone I hear a lot with punk players. I prefer the Gibson Les Paul myself, but I own a couple of Epiphone LPs and they work well also. Save your cash if a Fender or Squire comes around…. they are good for blues and shredding, but will break easily with the first stage dive, and sound kind of “thin” when hitting those power chords or crunching it up.
And IMHO, if you like punk, play punk. If you want to expand, expand. But play what makes you happy, and go with that. Punk is simple to play; but like playing the blues, people will know if someone is just “going through the motions” with three chords and someone “playing what they feel inside”. If you’re having fun with three chords, then have fun with three chords. I prefer to sing melodies and have my guitarists play textures and involvded leads, but not everyone is into my style of rock, and I understand that. And I don’t play punk, but every now and again I can get into a band playing “Bodies” or “God Save the Queen”, and I rather hear it from a bunch of actual punk players than some poseurs who are my age (37) fronting old punk songs between their sets of Van Morrison and Neil Diamond covers.
