or any others you might like? i have an art rack mount sgx 2000 tube pre for my classic rock sound but it does not cut it for metal sounds and i don’t know which pedal to get? i want that metallica heavy sound!Eh, no such thing. Different pedals sound different. Which one sounds best with your particular guitar and amp, and your playing style, is totally subjective (obviously).
Some people get a kick ass sound out of the Big Muff, some people use the Metal Zone, some people like the Tube Screamer… it’s preference.
The thing a lot of people ignore is EQ. The best way to get an awesome distortion tone is to take two EQ pedals and put them on either side of the distortion pedal, then work on getting a great sound. Once you’ve got it, get some pickups that match the curve of the EQ in front of the distortion pedal, and match the amp’s tone controls to the curve of the second EQ (if you can).
James Hetfield has been a long time user of Mesa/Boogie amps, which have a much more robust EQ section than most manufacturers. He also uses graphic EQs on the floor. Most of his distortion is from the amp, he just knows how to shape it (or rather, Flemming Rasmussen and Bob Rock did).
Kirk has gone back and forth between a couple amps, but he’s always used an old Ibanez Tube Screamer on the floor.
