6v lantern battery amp hours?
I have looked all over the internet and manufacturers sites, but I cannot find the amp/hour rating of a “typical heavy duty” lantern battery such as that from rayovac.
I have seen some alkaline versions with approx ratings of 11-13 amp hours but none for a standard zinc chloride version. HELP!
The original lantern battery is supposed to be made up of 4 x “F” size cells, which are the capacity of 2 x D cells or 4 x “C” cells each, in the sense of chemicals provided and operating well within the ratings. However there are quite a variety of lantern batteries available in the same package, with corresponding price differences. Some have 4 x C cells, so 1/4 the “original” capacity. Some have 2 x 4 x C, some have 4 x D. At first you may think they are distinguishable by weight, but some have added dead weight in them too (lumps of iron I have seen). Additionally some use alkaline, some carbon zinc types. I am not aware of any with alkaline “F” cells. This makes for a variation from 4 to 14Ah nominally. If there were alkaline “F” cells that would be 28Ah. EverReady and Duracell are definitely involved in some of these misleading practices, I have seen them in both, but I just don’t know about Rayovac, it is not marketed here. The only ways to be sure are to cut one open, or measure its capacity at your working load. Unfortunately these are both destructive methods, unless you have access to an Xray machine? You could get some idea by short circuit current of a fresh battery. It should be about 20A briefly for D cell equivalent. A good project would be to define a method that measured the cell internal resistance perhaps.
It seems that one of the purposes of non rechargeable battery manufacturers is to try to create mystery by muddying the water about their products so they can have gold, goldier and goldiest versions, with no specification other than the advertising spiel. To this end most people now believe non-rechargeable cells cannot be well specified in Amp hours, but of course they can be, like any other cell, with appropriate operating conditions specified. This does not necessarily reflect what you get under your particular operating conditions, but you pay for the chemicals, and what you get is directly reflected in the capacity, so it is a good indicator of value for money.
