Trying out guitars in a store?
Well I’ve never actually tried out the guitars in a store before. This is because I have 2 guitars: a nooby, entry-level electric (Fender Starcaster) from Best Buy and a pretty good, cheap acoustic (Gibson Maestro). I’ve been playing for about 2 years and I need a new electric. Does one simply walk in and take one off the wall rack or do you need permission first? I wouldn’t even have to plug it in because I could care less about the pickups at this point in time; it’s all about how comfortable the body is (Dean ML AT3000).

Having worked in many music stores I can tell you that we always appreciate it when someone asks first. It is just polite to do so. You will usually be greeted when you walk in and when you ask you will usually get a reply of “sure!” or “go for it!”. Be sure to tell the sales person that you are seeking to buy in the near future and tell them the price ranges you are looking in. They will usually be more than glad to help you and will suggest several possibilities. Since you are looking at your first “good” electric guitar (starcaster is junk) be sure to try several different models. You may have picked the Dean for looks but that is not the best way to chose a guitar. Pick a guitar for how it feels when you play it and how it sounds plugged in. You should be concerned with pickups and electronics because that is what an electric guitar is all about! It is much easier to buy a good guitar with good pickups than to get a good guitar and have to change the pickups because they don’t have the right sound for you. Be choosy, after all, you will be playing this guitar a lot and probably for a long time. Take your time and play many different guitars, and go to several stores until you find some that really stick out in your mind. Go back a few times and play it. Don’t be in a rush to get a new guitar. Being patient will really help you pick the best instrument for you
