They say that steel strings can be put on this guitar! You should NEVER put steel strings on a classical guitar! The guitar neck is not built for that kind of stress and the neck will warp over time. Not to mention the stress of steel strings can also uproot the bridge warping the front of the guitar. If the person selling this guitar has ever used steel strings on it, then it probably already has warp damage and that explains the cheap price – buyer BEWARE!If you must buy one of these, #3 looks like the best bet to me.
BUT…
You’d be better off going to a pawn shop or a local guitar dealer so you can have hands on experience before you buy. Guitars are very individualized with different feels. You should actually have your “beginner” friend go with you so he/she can feel the strings on the neck and get live advice from the seller on which guitar is best for that individual. Usually local guitar dealers are happy to make any adjustments on the guitar for you that you need and they know what they’re doing. I have a home recording studio full of guitars and keyboards and I never buy any musical instrument that I can’t check over thoroughly in person. You can even ask one of the sales people to play it for you before you buy it so you can atleast hear it’s potential. Listen carefully for “fretbuzz” ( a buzzing sound of a string vibrating against a fret while holding a chord) and if you hear it, ask them to raise the strings. If that doesn’t correct the problem, it’s a bad guitar. And if it does correct the problem, the strings should still be easy to press down for making chords. If that is difficult, don’t buy that guitar.Also, ask for light gauge strings to be put on the guitar. These are easier for beginners and they don’t hurt the fingers as much as heavier gauge strings.
Look down the guitar neck (standing the guitar on the floor looking down on it along the neck and check for warpage. If it’s warped, don’t buy it!
Alvarez is a nice beginner guitar at a reasonable price.
Also, make sure you buy a “left handed” guitar if your beginner is left handed.
