Guitar trouble, help with strings?
I have a Fender Squier strat and I’ve been playing guitar for 6 years now, and i’ve never really learned much about strings and why there are different gauges and such. I’ve always used my 9 gauge super slinkys strings. But Lately I’ve been snapping strings quite frequently. I haven’t changed anything with my strumming style, picks I use, or anything. I do leave my guitar on a stand in my basement and it is kind of musty down there so I’m assuming that could be a factor. And I’m not sure but my pick is becoming worn out that I’m using so could it possibly be the worn pick cutting into the strings? And I did have my guitar recently professionally set up. So does anyone have any suggestions for types of strings or different gauge of strings and what a good storage area for my guitar is so that my strings will last longer and stay in tune better? Any recommendations? Thank you all is appreciated greatly.
Hi Frank, from what you’ve told me, there are a few things factoring into the wearing of your materials.
First of all, the musty basement isn’t a very good choice for a delicate wooden guitar or the strings. If you play your guitar everyday, then the stand is a must, but if you only play it maybe once a week, i recommend case storage. The gauge of the strings is important, and if the gauge of your strings is too light, then your strings will break too frequently, so trying a 10 or 12 gauge string could possibly lengthen the play time.
The basement is actually the most likely reason for the broken strings. Every time you play your guitar, it warms from your body heat, when you stop, it cools, what is most likely happening is that when you play your guitar, the warm strings are expanding, and when you stop, they shrink. When this process happens too rapidly, too frequently and too drastically, the strings tend to get almost microscopic cracks, which obviously weaken them, causing them to snap.
Your picks are probably wearing down so much because of all the cracks in your strings, and they are rubbing the pick down because there is more friction than is intended for the picks.
I hope this helps you out!
