How do I make this character more real and less Mary Sueish?
Elizabeth Noelle Hope~ 15 with long dark wavy elegant looking chocolate brown hair that ends at her chest . She has dark, deep pacific blue eyes and thick framed lashes. A clear face complexion. She has a slim body and holds her stand in a almost graceful way.Her hobby and passion is singing and playing the guitar in her free time. She’s quite smart and cunning for her age but can be extremely hard to trust because she can be tricky and manipulating.
I really don’t want her to be a Mary- Sue so is there any good flaws I can add for her?Flaws are good. Of course, you can’t add too many, or you risk making your character unlikeable. However, you’ve already added a flaw – manipulative. Explore that as you write.
Perhaps (instead of having a completely clear complexion) she could have a dusting of freckles across her face – not a flaw, in my opinion, but a quirky feature that makes her individual. Or perhaps, while her hair is generally wavy and elegant, she could have a few locks of hair at the front that never do what she wants them to do. Maybe she’s a little clumsy, with a habit of knocking things over or breaking them. Perhaps she pushes things too far sometimes when she speaks to her friends.
A good idea would be to write out a character profile when you have a spare moment. Jot down the basics (like name, age, etc.), but then go on to add her favourite colour/food/drink/place to be. Add her height (or weight), birthday, best friends, people she doesn’t really like. How’s her relationship with her parents/friends/possible boyfriend? Will she have a love interest? Key moments in her past? Key moments you have planned in her future? Imagine yourself having a conversation with her in you’re head (as if you were her friend, or parent); say something to her, and imagine her response. Is she witty? Sarcastic? A little snappy? Maybe she harbours a secret she doesn’t want anyone to know about just yet. Branch out on these things, and you’ll soon find that she feels more real to you. Imagine her as a real person in your head – and if you suddenly think of something that she might say/do, jot it down (and remember to always carry a pencil and a small note-pad with you).
