Why does wood determine the sound of a guitar, or Ukulele?
Is it because some is heavier or lighter than others?
Or more solid?If there was a glass guitar made, how would it sound?
Its down to strength (it has to support the tension of the strings) and rigidity ( a flexible or soft wood would dampen the sound).
They have made a cello that is virtually carbon fibre throughout. This is extremely rigid and resonant. It has been proved to give the cello greater volume and a crisper sound.
With regard to glass: I think it would have to be too thick to give a decent sound. Its thickness has to allow for string tension. Laminated glass might work but the laminate glue might act as a dampener.
