buying A Guitar…?
i’m starting guitar but i dont know what to look for in a steel string guitar.. what should i get?? the one i’m looking at is $209 and you get the guitar, a pick, a gig bag, a dvd thing, an extra set of strings and the guitar has a built in tuner. is this any good?
What you are looking at is called a starter pack. You don’t mention the brand of the guitar, so I can’t really say anything about the quality. Most of the starter packs are acceptable, but sometimes the action (space between the strings and the fingerboard) is a little high. This can be problematic for someone who is just starting out.
Make sure the neck has a functional truss rod in it, if you are buying a steel string guitar.
Ask the music store you are buying it from if they do a proper set up before the guitar leaves the shop. If you are buying this from a department or warehouse store, you are going to have to find a music store or luthier to accomplish these things for you.
Take a friend along who plays guitar and ask to let your friend inspect it. Make sure the tuning pegs don’t have a lot of play in them. Let your friend play it and listen to what it sounds like. Look at the finishing and make sure it was done right. (Sometimes the edges are rough and once I actually saw a bit of bark on the neck!)
the advice you got about buying a classical guitar for your first guitar is not bad advice at all by the way. Nylon strings are a lot easier to press down at first and the wider neck can make it easier to shape your first chords. The most important thing however, is to buy a guitar that you will actually play. If you are going to play rock and do a lot of strumming, the nylon might not be the best choice as the chords can sound muddy. Anyone who actually stays with the guitar for more than a month, has sufficient callouses built up by then to play any type of string they want to. Start out by playing five minutes at a time, several times a day. Work your way up to a half an hour over the next three to four weeks. When it stops hurting, play longer.
Some good brands to look for in starter packs are Yamaha, Epiphone, Washburn, and Fender. I won’t tell you what brands to stay away from, because I am not interested in being sued, but if you are buying the guitar from a reputable dealer that stands behind the warranty, you should be okay. As for price, see if you can find the same starter pack on a site like Musician’s Friend or Sam Ash. If the price is about the same, you are getting a good deal (remember that these stores often charge shipping and handling, which drives the price up a bit. Remember also that a local store will offer local service and you won’t have to mail it back if it doesn’t work!) If the price is remarkably lower, take a printout of the price you found it for, to the store and politely ask for a discount. You might get one, or you may decide to get the guitar for the lower price. I’ll stick a couple of links below and hope that you’ll do the research yourself.
