which frequency is the tone control on electric guitars meant to filter down to?
I’m curious; down to which frequency does the tone potentiometer act to filter the signal? I’d really appreciate some insight. Obviously the value will vary between guitars, but what is the cut off frequency for a Gibson with a humbucker and a fender with a single coil?
A guitar tone control is a frequency selective electronic
circuit consisting of a simple potentiometer connected in
series with a capacitor and both in parallel with an inductor.The capacitor pass high frequencies, and the inductor pass
low frequencies while the resistor controls how much of the
signal gets through to the output.By turning the tone knob you are varying the resistance of
the potentiometer and the selecting the timbre of the sound.Turning the knob one way varies the pot to allow say ‘more
treble’ to be shunted through the capacitor to ground.While, turning the knob the other way raises the treble and
shunts more signal throught the inductance to ground;
thereby reducing the bass.
