Volume pot on an electric guitar ?
I want to change the volume pots on my electric guitar ……can any one tell me what the difference is between Log pots & linear pots is and which is the best for the job…?
The guitar has humbucking pick ups …………..ThanksThe difference is the “curve” of the increase when you turn it. Linear pots are exactly what they are named, a linear increase. Turn it half way up, and it puts out 50% output. Log pots have a different curve (its hard to explain, you would have to see an image to know what i am talking about.). They are designed to increase based on the way the human ear percieves the increase. So on a log pot, turn it half up and it might put out around 65% output. The curve is sharp at first (1/10 of the way up might put out 25% output). and rolls off slowly at the top (8/10 of the way up puts out about 90%). So without confusing you more…. if you are replacing the volume pot, use a log pot. If you are replacing the tone pot, use linear.
