Looking for a guitar with humbuckers but still a semi bright tone?
So i play rhythm accompanied by my vocals and i’m looking for a 6 string electric guitar to replace my squire strat. i like the sound of a tele alot but because i will be playing rhythm everyone i talk to shoves humbuckers down my throat.
it seems like all guitars with humbuckers are focused on heavy metal so i can never see anyone play stuff like ska chords on them.
I am looking for a rhythm guitar to accompany my highish voice, i sing stuff like We are Scientists, Bedouin Soundclash, Alkaline Trio (we added a lead part to these artists songs i play the originals with light distortion) Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Strokes.
So my question is: is there a guitar out there with humbuckers that is less bright and distracting then the telecaster, but for an up tempo band with a high pitched vocalist.
Why don’t you just stick with your tele and just replace the pickups? It might seem like sacrilege, especially if you like the sound of your pickups now, but when a guitar is inherently bright and snappy it takes a pretty heavily-flavored pickup to change that… and it’s never truly possible, since a pickup is essentially a filter… and you can’t filter *in* something, only out… make sense?
I totally agree with that comment about the output of a pickup. The higher the output, in general, the lower quality the tone, at least from a clean/acoustic or “organic” tone viewpoint. One general measurement of pickup output is the DC Resistance… my JB is a great sounding pickup with a DC Resistance of around 14k, which is about as hot as you can get before you start getting into that “too hot to do anything but distortion” realm.
The Pearly Gates and Alnico II Pros are Seymour Duncan pups with great tones to them. The Pearly Gates are on the treblier side, sure, but they’re so dang sweet sounding! The Alnico II’s generally tend to give you more of that Slash/GNR sound, but it’s a good warm tone, one that I think would be well-suited to your tele. The Seth Love is another model that might work for you, too.
If you decide that you don’t want to go that route, I understand! Me, I got an LTD EC-50 a while back, and I just love that dang guitar, I play it even more than my Jackson Dinky now! After a setup/intonation, replacing some of the electronics, and swapping out the bridge humbucker for that JB (ie Seymour Duncan SH-4, I think), I get a great sound for cleans, its warm and thick enough to get a good solid chunk for the heavy/hard rock stuff that I do, but I can pull back the volume just a smidge and all of a sudden get these great cleans.
And that’s the other point – you have a tone knob… why don’t you use it? You can actually swap out the value of the tone capacitor to change its response… talk to a guitar tech or do some google searching on it, it’s a pretty simple mod and might keep you from having to even get new pickups or a new guitar!
You can also get an onboard preamp, which can make your signal hotter, or provide some EQ. I’ve gone that route with the EC-50, and I’m incredibly happy with the results… gives me more treble response, and I can roll back that tone knob and get a very warm, round sound out of it.
I have an old octave down pedal, it has this nifty mix control where you can mix some of the octave down into the signal… so sometimes I’ll put it into the fx chain on the amp. I dial a bit of that into the mix, and it really does thicken up my tone a lot. Combine that with judiciously tweaked tone and volume knobs and possibly even a pedal like the ElectroHarmonix Punch Out (google it, it’s cool) and I’m betting you could have a perfectly usable rhythm sound without having to swap out pickups or getting a new guitar.
You can also look at getting a metal cover for you pickups… even if they’re single coil, it’ll still have an effect… metal covers tend to “smooth” out the sound a bit, ie, cuts some of the treble. Hmm. Might be something to think about. I don’t know if a few layers of aluminum foil might do the trick? I’ve never tried, but now I’m wondering… hmmm… if you give that a shot, send me an email, okay? I’d be fascinated to hear what happened, if it worked or just made a humming sound….
People focus on humbuckers because its the easiest way to get “that” sound. There are other ways, as I’ve tried to outline, it just takes a little bit of creativity. Sometimes people listen too much with their eyes, if you know what I mean – if they don’t see humbuckers they can’t accept what they’re hearing as valid!
Well, good luck, despite all those crazy people… if it sounds good to you, don’t be afraid to tell ‘em all to eff off!
