Best setting for distortion on my guitar amp?
I own a Marshall MG 15CD amplifier for my guitar. Its a small amp but it does the job for me. Just wondering on setting the knobs (EQ) what would give me the best “raw, punchy” distortion? I have Bass, Contour, and Treble features. And obviously have Overdrive with gain and volume. Any suggestions?
Regarding your tone quest for a “raw, punchy” sound – I would set the bass knob around 2:00, contour around 12:00, and treble around 1:00 or 2:00. I would keep the gain knob between 10:00 and 3:00. The contour knob is what will shape the “punchiness” of the sound, so 12:00 is just a good starting point. This depends on what type of pickups your guitar has…for single-coil pickups, I would knock down the treble a bit and increase the gain. For humbuckers, I would use the previous settings.
Also, as far as the gain knob, the higher it is set, the more “compressed” your tone will be, so for a “raw” sound, I suggest to keep it around the mid levels.
Just to avoid confusion, I use the settings in reference to a clock, for example, at 5:00 the knob would be cranked; at 12:00 the knob would be set halfway, etc.
