How do i set my guitar amp?
I just got a amp for my guitar and i don’t know how to do the settings. its a epiphone casino. i don’t know how to set it for distortion or anything. like what the knobs on my guitar mean. it has 2 knobs that say volume and 2 that say tone.
i wanted to know how to do it for distortion and rock/bluesThe Casino is the guitar. You’re asking about the amp, but you’re only talking about the guitar. Without knowing what type of amp you have, its impossible to tell you exactly how to dial in a distorted sound.
You get your distortion from a pedal or from the amp itself, not from the guitar.
Some amps don’t have built-in distortion. For those amps, you’ll either need a pedal, or need to buy a new amp.
The knobs on your guitar work like this – you’ve got two pickups, four knobs, and should have a selector switch. The switch determines which pickup is “on” – sometimes there’s a middle setting to the switch that has them both “on”. For each pickup there’s a volume knob to control how loud it is, and a tone knob that controls how much treble/high frequencies it puts out.
With all knobs all the way up (ie at “10″) then each pickup is at its loudest and has the least amount of treble cut (ie they’re the brightest they can be). This will generally give you the most distortion, if you’ve got distortion on your pedal or amp.
If your distortion is a little too trebly, shrieky, hissy, etc then you might want to dial down the “treble” knob on the pedal or amp, or dial down the tone knob for that pickup. If you’ve got too much distortion, you can lower the “gain” knob on your amp or pedal, or turn down the volume knob for that pickup… this will give you a cleaner sound, ie less distortion.
I mention that because if you’re going for blues, you’ll probably want to roll your tone knob back a little, and might need to roll your volume back to 6 or 7…. but of course it does depend on what amp/pedals you’re using, too!
The advice about putting all of your knobs all the way up is good – that’s your default setting, but remember to play around with it… some players like to dial their volume down to 5 or 6, get the sound they like out of their amp, then when they want to solo, raise their guitar’s volume up to 9 or 10! This is called using the guitar as a “master volume”, although how well it works does depend, again, on your amp/pedals….
For distortion, the most common “rock” thing is to use your bridge pickup (the one closest to the bridge, where the strings go in the guitar) for your rhythm and switch to your neck pickup only when you want to solo, but for earlier rock and blues its often the other way around. What you use will be up to you, and whatever sounds best to you….
There’s a lot of playing around for you to do – its worth it, though, cuz once you find what you like it’ll all start coming together for you!
