Whats the difference between a “full size” guitar and a “dreadnought”?
I was at Target and saw a guitar called a full size guitar for sixty dollars then there was a dreadnought for ninety. What are other similarities and differences in these besides size?
That’s not a meaningful question. A full size guitar is one with a scale length of 24 1/2″ to 25 1/2″. Scale length is the length of the strings from saddle to nut, that is, the length of the part of the string that vibrates.
Dreadnought is a specific body shape of acoustic guitars popularized by CF Martin Company. While most dreadnought shape acoustic guitars are full size, there are some dreads that are less than full size, like the Taylor Baby and Big Baby.
But here’s the thing:
Buy your guitar at a guitar store and nowhere else. Not from a big box store like Target and not from the internet. A $60 or even $90 guitar is a piece of crap. Go to a music store, spend more, and at least get a decent beginners’ guitar.
