How do i correctly tune my bass guitar? + more?
i am just starting to play bass, and i went to an online tuner, and it has like each string, and each tuning, http://www.get-tuned.com/bass_guitar_tuner.php, well am i supposed to tune every string to the same tuning, or is each string supposed to be different? and if theyre all different, how do you know which tuning to call it (like drop d, etc)
Standard tuning consists of tuning each string in fourths. On a four string, you would tune the bass E A D G, with the lowest string (the thickest) being the E. On a five string, the fourth interval is still constant, only with an added B below the E string, or less commonly, a C above the G string. If you play a major scale in each of the keys, you will notice that the fourth degree of an E major scale is an A, and that the fourth degree of an A major scale is a D, and so on and so on.
Drop tunings refer to a variant of standard tuning where the lowest string is dropped a whole step below the standard tuning of a whole step above the given drop key. This creates a fifth interval between the lowest and the second lowest string. Drop D tuning refers to E standard tuning, but with the E string now tuned to a D. Drop C and Drop B tunings refer to the bass being in C-G-C-F and B-F-B-E tuning, respectively. A C major scale’s fifth degree is a G, and a B major scale’s fifth degree is an F. Note how if you were to raise the lowest string by one whole step, the new tunings would be D standard and C standard tuning, respectively. Each succeeding interval is now a fourth from the previous string, rather than the fifth interval between the lowest and the second-lowest string.
