I hate to break the news to you, but that cute little portable amp you paid fairly big bucks for is not going to cut it. If you want metal sound the way to get it is with high gain pickups, a good metal distortion pedal and a high gain amp with great speakers. No practice amp will do. The speakers sound tinny. No matter how many pedals you put in the chain, the end sound is thin and tinny. You need speakers capable of being driven and pushing some air. Most beginners under estimate the importance of the amp and speakers in their overall sound. A great guitar played through a lousy amp or lousy speakers will sound lousy. A mediocre guitar played through a good amp and speakers will sound decent.
Les Paul is all right for metal (unless you have one of those one weak pickup jobbies). The cute little amp is an expensive paper weight. A decent and inexpensive pedal is the Boss Metal Zone. Danelectro Black Coffee is all right and even cheaper.Not as good as the Boss pedal, but will do the job. If you want a basic distortion (but not metal) then the Boss DS-1 is a good starter pedal. However, all of that still depends on what you run it through. For that you need a decent amp. Find the best deal you can get on a used 2×12 combo amp. Fender, Vox, Crate, Peavey, B-52 or Line 6. Any of those in a 2×12 combo will get the job done. I see used 2×12 combo amps sell on eBay at very attractive prices. Some of those amps may already have a built in distortion that will satisfy you. If not, add the distortion pedal.
Tone controls on your guitar are not really going to get you distortion. Sure you can adjust the tone settings to get the sound you want to run into your distortion pedal, but the guitar alone will not get you metal distortion. The tone controls on your little amp are not going to do much.
For metal sound, you will really need to get a much better amp and speakers.
