Am I using the right guitar pick for me?
I’ve been using .71 dunlop gator grip picks for about 4 years now. I must say that I pretty much never drop these picks ever, and I’m pretty comfortable with them. I mainly play 5th chord rhythm rock with pretty heavy distortion, and I hit the strings very hard with my rhythm hand.
I wore out my picks. I was about to just buy more .71s, but I realized that I only use the side of the pick while I play. After I thought about it and looked at the pick, I think it’s because the point of the pick is too thin for me, and I might be naturally preferring the thicker part of the pick. But it’s just a guess. I don’t know. Maybe I just want my hand closer to the strings?
Anybody have any advice for me?
I used to break picks all the time so got used to using the sides and discovered I had better pick control using the side so that’s all I use nowdays. Started talking about that with other guitarists and found that lots of us use the sides of the pick, so don’t feel strange about doing that. Most of the better guitarists I’ve known do the same thing.
The Dunlops are my favorites. I eventually either lose them or wear them out but never break them. I use a bit lighter pick for a couple reasons. Pick control and because I was breaking too many strings. I tend to be pretty heavy handed and by switching to a lighter gauge pick I found I broke strings less often and could do more intricate picking with the lighter gage. I still use med gauge picks for acoustic guitar and bass but on electrics I’m using .50s. Hate the color of the Dunlop .50s though
My advice would be to move down to the .60s. You’ll see improved control but the .50s might be a bit too thin for what your doing. I play quite a few different styles and need the versitility of the .50s. Strong enough to still mash the strings for heavy tunes but thin enough to do leads and such.
