Do I have to lock the nut on a Floyd Rose tremolo?
So I’m thinking about getting a Floyd Rose guitar, I know how to set up a floating bridge, since my guitar has one, so I figured why not try a FR out. Only thing is, sometimes when I’m jamming, I switch to drop d tuning for a little bit to play some metal riffs. I know I’m supposed to adjust the springs in the back but I usually only stay in that tuning for a few minutes. So my question is, could I leave the locking nut on a FR unlocked so I could make this switch or is there something I don’t know about?
The change in tension by detuning the low E string should effect the other 5 strings somewhat. Ive found that having more springs in the rear cavity makes the change less. Depending on how your guitar is setup, you may still be able to get in tune. But, by detuning that 1 string, you also may throw those other strings out a little bit. I have the same issue in one of my bands, so I bring 2 guitars, 1 for each tuning.
