What is the best way to self-teach electric guitar?
Hello, I am a 10th grade high school guy. I recently became interested in guitar playing. I used to love the game guitar hero very much, but it seems I want to take it one step further. I have beaten every song on guitar hero III except “the devil went to georgia” on expert (yes that includes through the fire and flames), and I have a real interest in guitar.What is the best way to self teach electric guitar. Includes DVD sets, books, youtube videos, internet sites, etc… just give a suggestion. I really cannot afford lessons because I am pushing my parents enough just for letting me buy a guitar. I already know how to read music due to piano and violin experience, but everything else I will need to learn. Thanks.

Everybody has a best way to learn. Depends on who you are and how you best learn. The way I learned was this.
I checked out a chord book from the LIbrary. I learned a bunch of chords. Practiced until I could move back and forth between those chords.
Then I sought out every guitarist I could find that knew a single song I didn’t know and bugged them till they taught me every song they knew
After that I started reading tabs for songs and playing in bands. I also started picking some easy songs off by ear at that point. The main riff for Dazed and Confused being the first one I figured out by ear, though it took me a while to figure out the rest of the song.
Playing in cover bands really helped me learn a ton of technique to play the songs we really wanted to play. By playing rythem guitar I always had the lead player to watch to learn most songs from.
All along I tinkered with writing my own songs. Each song made me a better composer. Don’t wait until you feel like an expert. Soon as you can chord play around with stuff and experiement. It’ll help you in all aspects of playing guitar as well as composing.
Some people learn best from a single teacher. As such learning enough to get into a weak band is a great experience even if you hate the songs your learning. It’s the techniques that your after really. You got to be able to chord and change chords before hoping to learn songs.
No matter how you learn timing is CRUCIAL. Practice to recordings of songs you know. Get a metronome and practice to it also.
Another way to learn is tabs. Listen to the music, look at the tab, reproduce the music. Sounds simple but it’s not that easy
Still it’s doable if your determined. Easier to learn a couple tunes from other folks and to start with really easy songs. Don’t try to start with Stairway. It’s a beautiful song but if you try to learn it as a begginner by the time you do you’ll hate that song Worse everybody will want to hear you play it and if you already hate it, well you get the idea. If your into Rock Scorpions songs are an excellent start. The rythem guitar is clear, crisp and usually fairly simple. Many AC/DC songs are good songs to learn early on. Go with easy songs early on but concentrate on playing them right and on time.
