what kind of pickups should i install on my standard fender stratocaster?
My guitar is a basic fender stratocaster. I don’t have any specific playing style or preffered sound, era, or anything. Any ideas on good (not too expensive) pickups to get?
I agree with OU812, Fralin pickups are killer. However, that answer was the exact oppostive of what you were asking. Fralin pickups are extremely expensive. They are considered boutique pickups.
Anyway, if you don’t know what style or sound you want, then a good question is, “why are you changing your pickups”?
If you have an American Fender Strat, your pickups are probably pretty good already as well as somewhat desirable. The Japanese and MIM strats are ok. It would also help to know what pickup configuration you have. Is your pick guard H/S/S or S/S/S.
Seymour Duncan makes terrific pickups, as does DiMarzio. Both companies if bought new, will set you back around $60-$80 for each pickup, not including installation costs.
Im a big fan of Carvin single coils. They make a pickup called the AP-11. I think they are around $40 new, and you can get them for around $20-$30 on ebay used. I love them in the neck and middle positions. I would also suggest getting a hotrail in the bridge and coil tapping it. A hotrail will run you about $80, and its a humbucker that fits in a single coil space. With a coil tap, you can have it function as a single coil or a humbucker (if your guitar doesn’t have a humbucker space in the pickguard). A hotrail will typically give you a better and cleaner distortion sound than single coils… its technically called a stacked humbucker. So, my answer is 2 Carvin AP-11′s and 1 hotrail. It should run you around $160 new, or around $90 for all 3 if you get them used.
Ive heard a lot of good things about GFS pickups as well, but can’t comment. If you are willing to get used pickups (no reason not to), you will have much better options. But again, its hard to help you if you don’t know what sound you are after.
