Is the Fender Squier Affinity Stratocaster electric guitar any good?

Which is a better deal? the first one is $230, the second is $200
Fender is one of the oldest names in electric guitars…and the most copied. Squier is a company owned and licensed by Fender to make copies of real Fender guitars. They’re asian made, with less expensive parts and electronics. The cheaper ones aren’t very good and have given Squier a bad name with experienced guitarists. A band mate of mine plays a Squier Affinity Stratocaster…and it’s not a bad guitar. It’s very playable and the pickups could be upgraded if he ever wants to. Some of the switches have been plagued with scratching and crackles and may ultimately need to be replaced too….but the guitar isn’t bad to play.

The guitars that you’re looking at are not the same ones as the regular Affinity. When you buy these “starter packages” you get what you pay for. Notice that it’s called an “Affinity Special Strat” Do you think that the word “special” makes it better or worse than the regular Affinity? All I can tell you is that it comes pre-packaged so you don’t even get to try it out. And the old saying is true: you get what you pay for.
If I had to choose between the two packages, I’d go with the Affinity. The cheaper package has a SE Special Strat…who knows what that one is? For the cost, it’s obviously a cheaper model and the cheaper Squiers aren’t very good. Just realize that neither package deal contains a guitar model that’s sold separately….so you don’t have anything to compare to. My inclination would be to get the guitar and amp as separate purchases…you’ll know what you’re getting.
