Will my Fender Telecaster appreciate in value?
I have a 1980 Fender Telecaster. Its got a sunbirst finish, three saddle bridge, all original. It was “Made in Japan” and this may make it sound like it was made with less quality, but ive heard from a few guitar people that the Japanese ones rivaled the quality of the US guitars in the 80′s. It looks like this guitar, only in better condition.

also i forgot to mention the guitar is left handedYes, it should go up in value over time. As Fender raises it’s prices for new guitars, the old ones also go up in value. What makes guitars collectable or valuable is the scarcity of the particular model and the demand for it.
The Fenders made in Japan ran from 82-97. After that, they began identifying the guitars as “crafted in Japan” which is not 100% made in Japan. Fender started the production line in Japan because there were many Japanese “fake” Fenders around. That was their way to counter the issue. Rumor has it that the Japanese Fenders were better made than USA Fenders and were hurting the USA line. Currently the demand for the US Fenders is stronger than Japanese ones.
So your best option is to hold on to it, treat it well, and maybe in some time it will surpass the US models for different reasons. Otherwise, just enjoy it as a guitar, they are great quality, and I personally own one.
