I want to extend my guitar collection…?
but I don’t know what to get. I’ve been playing for about a year and a half on my Fender Squier (which has been great to me!) but I’m ready to move on. I actually want to buy several guitars. Most likely two electrics and one acoustic. The problem is I don’t know much about guitar brands and their models. My range for each guitar is something like $800- $2,000 a piece.
And I’m just curious, what is the main reason for having multiple guitars? Is it because different brands/models have different sounds? Or is it to leave them in different tunings so that you can switch guitars easily when performing?
And if my style of music is a factor in what I should buy, here are the bands I want to sound like: Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age. I have a big love for ambient, “stoner rock”, dark, eerie guitar sounds if that helps at all.
Okay, you have quite a few options here…..
First of all the reason to have multiple guitars is to obtain different tones and sounds. Each guitar will get a different sound with pedals and amplifiers. Also a lot of that dark eerie sound that you are going for is going to have a lot to do with the amp and pedals that you use too. There are a few guitars that I would recommend for you based on the bands you listed.Fender ’72 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue ($700-$1000)- This guitar is going to give you dual wide range humbuckers. This is also a guitar that is used quite a bit by Radiohead. The guitar gives you a full sound that would be great for doing the Radiohead thing, as well as giving you a great foundation for creating sounds similar to those used in Soundgarden. With a few helpful pedals you’ll be able to do Queens of the Stone Age too. The guitar will do Pink Floyd okay… but not exactly.
Fernandes Ravelle Elite ($900 – $1100) – This guitar has a Seymour Duncan humbucker in the bridge and a sustainer pickup in the neck. This guitar is an archtop that will be very helpful in obtaining the sounds used by the Deftones, A Perfect Circle, and Alice in Chains. This will also do the Queens of the Stone Age really well. It won’t do Pink Floyd or Radiohead very well though. This guitar gives a good solid bottom end sound that is just as good if not better than a Les Paul.
Gibson Les Paul Studio ($800 – $1400) – The Les Paul has been the standard for harder rock and roll for as long as anyone can remember. The archtop guitar gives great sustain and a good solid rock and roll sound with its dual humbuckers. This guitar is going to be perfect for the Soungarden and Queens of the Stone Age type sound. I wouldn’t expect it to do tones like Pink Floyd though.
The last one that I would recommend would only be in consideration if it were to be used as a second guitar in addition to one of the others.
American Standard Stratocaster ($1000-$1200) This guitar is going to give you three single coil pickups similar to the Squire you already have. This guitar will do the Pink Floyd tones nicely as well any classic rock type sounds. This guitar with a few helpful pedals will be able to cover Radiohead and Queens of the Stone Age, but don’t expect it to do heavier stuff.
