My Peavy Amp is giving this scratchy sound?
Alright well I have an ESP ltd. F-50 Electric Guitar, and i have a Peavy Transtube 112 EFX Amplifier, I also have a SP1000i Studio Pro 1000 Instrument Cable. Also the strings are Ernie Ball Power Slinky’s.
When i am tremelo picking or basically just strumming the GBE string my amp is making a scratchy sound, like i am taking a knife and brushing it against the strings, its basically louder then the note i am playing, i tried playing the same strings on my smaller and older amp at id doesnt make as loud a scratch.
I also have another question, i have 2 different gain knobs, i have Pre Gain and Post gain, the post gain is technically the volume, when i have my pre gain at 7-10 my amp makes a loud screetch sound when i bring the post gain to 4-10, i only have 1 week left to return this amp if their is something wrong with it i don’t want to be stuck with it.
The other amp doesn’t make a scratch as loud sounding, but it’s still there? If that’s the case, try using a different cable, since that will be the easiest place to start. If that’s not it, then there may be something wrong with the wiring in your guitar. Try selecting different pickups, since it might be the pickup wiring. If that’s not it, then you may want to bring it to a guitar tech and have them check it out.
If that’s not any of it, it may be the wiring in the circuitry, in which case you’d probably have to take it to an amp tech and have them assess it. But, if it’s happening on both, then that wouldn’t likely be the case.
Of course, there’s always the issue of fluorescent lights. If you have fluorescent lighting in your house, that can mess with the signal in the amp and distort the output. That usually results in a constant buzzing, rather than a scratching sound which occurs when you pick a string, but it’s worth considering.
Also, if you put it at 7-10 and it screeches at louder volumes, it sounds like it’s probably just feedback. Though if it sounds distinctly different from feedback, then it could be due to any of the problems I described above.
Hope this helps you troubleshoot your issue. The best option, to me, would be to take both your guitar and amp into the shop to get them both checked out by a tech.
