How will it sound if I restring my electric guitar and the B and e strings are the same gauge?
I was looking to re-string my Gibson Explorer today and realized that i didnt have an e-string with a .009 gauge. I am using left over strings from over the years which consist of Blue Steel and Ernie Ball Extra Slinky strings. I know it would be better to just buy a new set but I don’t want to spend more money than I have to. Plus I’m curious about how it would sound if the B and e string both had .011 gauge strings. If anybody has done this before please let me know how it turned out.
I wouldn’t recommend doing it; if you use a thicker gauge for your high e string, you’re going to need to wind it tighter than usual, which is going to put an unusual and uneven tension on the neck, meaning it probably wouldn’t hold its tuning very well for very long. The high e would be really tight, hard to bend and probably prone to break soon, anyway.
If and when you decide to get some new strings, I would also just suggest getting an overall thicker gauge; I play pretty hard, and the only time I ever tried a .009 I broke it the same day I bought it. Moving up to a .010 doesn’t affect the tone or playability much and in my experience gets a noticeable improvement in durability.
