What are the best acoustic-electric guitar strings?
A few months ago I bought a new acoustic-electric guitar (Yamaha CPX500FM) and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good guitar string to buy for acoustic-electric. I bought some DR Zebra strings but they don’t provide the full sound that I wanted. I am looking for a medium warm tone…not too bright so that it sounds bad through an amp. Usually I’ll go with medium gauge starting with .12 or .13 high e string.
So any suggestions?
Also, what is the difference in sound between Phosphor Bronze and 80/20 Bronze strings?
Any thoughts on Elixir brand? (nanoweb coating)
The 80/20 bronze alloy is the most common type of acoustic steel strings. These strings are the brightest to begin with, but tend to mellow out rather quickly. Phosphor bronze is slightly harder, last longer and tend to sound a little mellower than the 80/20 in most players opinions (even though some may say otherwise
Elixir nanoweb is good, probably the best coated strings out there. The coating makes the strings last longer, still the nanoweb coating is so thin that you probably won’t hear any difference. Some coated strings are slightly duller than regular non coated strings. Maybe this is a type of sound you’d prefer?
I suspect the reason that you found the new strings to be bright is that new strings are bronze and well … bright as they are supposed to be, and this is the reason many like new strings (me included). However, if you get accustomed to dull strings over time, you may feel that this isn’t how strings are “supposed to sound” in your mind.
If you play through an amp then you can really use any type of acoustic steel strings, since you can adjust the EQ to your liking anyway by rollling off some highs.
The only way to find out what suites you for sure, is to try different brands and types of strings. Perhaps you might even want to try silk and steel? These are softer strings made for steel string acoustics – a bit closer to nylon strings. Be aware though that they don’t last very long and that they are perhaps best suited for finger picking.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you will have to have your neck truss rod adjusted when you try out various types of strings, due to the different gauges and tensions.
