Guitar question? Has anyone ever seen?
A vintage VSA555 hollowbody electric guitar with a birds eye sunburst finish. I have one I want to sell, and cannot find anything like it on the web in order to get a fix on the price I should ask for. Is it rare, and are there any guitar gurus out there who would know? I bought it about 10 years ago for £450.00 and it is pristene.
EDIT: No, that is a black finish. You can find those anywhere, and a red one I think, but I have never seen the birds eye finish before.Well, I can only tell you that it wouldn’t sell well at all in the U.S. I’ve bought and sold over 8 million a year for five years (stopping 2 years ago), and have never seen one in the states – but we have so many Gibsons, Guilds, Gretches, etc, that I would say ebay isn’t your answer. Value doesn’t necessarily follow rarity.
However, if the top is DIFFERENT (meaning solid birds eye maple, rather than laminate, as the above person mentions), it would be more valuable – due to superior quality of construction and materials.
However, since I’m not familiar with the brand’s history (a rare thing for me), I must point out that low serial numbers are desireable – Ken Smith has only made basses since 1979, and I own serial number 7. If you have a low serial number Vintage guitar, and they do well in sales, it could be worth dramatically more than that.
My impression is that the guitar is a yeoman’s instrument – playable for stage and recording work, but not well known. Ephipone dot series guitars are in the same genre – and sell used in the states for about $800 U.S. (being about $1200 new).
If you are wondering if the finish is a limited run, you can always look up and call the company, dealer, or distributor. Chances of finding a Vintage brand guitar expert in this forum are slim, but not impossible.
