How hard do you need to press on the strings of an electric guitar?
I am taking acoustic guitar lessons with a steel string guitar. After I get good enough at that, I plan on transitioning to electric. How hard do you need to press on electric strings as opposed to acoustic strings? As you know, steel strings hurt like crap! I probably will have built up callouses by the time I get to electric, but since the vibration doesn’t have to be that big, would the strings be easier on the fingers?
You only need to press hard enough to get a clean sound from the string. It’s typically easier on an electric guitar because the strings are closer to the fretboard (lower action) and the strings are usually lighter weight on electric guitars. Still, a good quality acoustic guitar with a light guage string can be just as easy to play as an electric guitar. I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for 37 years and my fingers don’t bother me. I also play electric guitar though and if you’re trying to play fast and ripping leads you really need a good electric guitar. Playing both is great. I have a Parker hybrid guitar as well, which is a really great electric guitar which also has piezo pickups in the bridge that make it sound like an acoustic guitar. The type of guitar you play really depends on the style of music you like, but generally speaking, you don’t need to press on the strings of an electric guitar nearly as hard as on an acoustic. The switch should be easy for you should you decide to do it.
