Is there a big difference in how to play an accoustic vs electric guitar?
I am just starting to play the accoustic guitar. I chose accoustic because I am only going to be playing for fun during the little free time I have. I will not be doing any type of performing. Price, space and convenience were all factors. But if I get really interested, and decide to I want to play electric, would there be much of a difference in the way it is played?
The transition from one to the other is easy. The tuning and chords are exactly the same. Everything that you play on acoustic can be played the same on an electric.
The feel of an electric is a little different. The strings are generally lighter gauge so they’re easier to bend. This means you need a lighter touch. The amp provides the volume, so you don’t have to hammer on the strings…except for show. Also, if you’re used to grabbing the neck with an iron clasp, you might pull strings out of tune. Stylistically, the ability to bend notes can add another level to the way you play. If you’re going to use effects like distortion, it can take a little while to adjust to them but you can take it a little at a time.
Even though there are minor differences in feel, don’t worry….it’s an easy transition.
