whats the main difference between analog and digital delays? (guitar effects)?
iv heard analogs sound better and iv been looking for a good analog pedal but while researching iv noticed that features wise digital delays are way better – different types of delays + longer delays times etc so just wondering how worth it exactly is it to sacrifice all that and go for analog? analogs also tend to cost more so besides supposedly sounding better id be paying more for less know what i mean?
the technical difference between analogue and digital effects (including delays) is that the analog whereas the digital effects pedal converts the output into digital information (1s and 0s, like a computer), alters it in this form, and then reconverts it so you get an output with a delay on it. but then you probably knew that.
what this means is that the analog output is actually a truer representation of what you played, whereas the digital is very close approximation. the difference is negligible with development in digitial effects today.
although the difference is small, some players maintain that the analog gives overall better sound quality, and has a more ‘organic’ or natural sound. Guitarists like Tom Morello only use analog delays, and refuse digital effects.
unless you are a very advanced guitar player or someone willing to pay a lot to get a slightly better sound then you may want to go analog. i would advise against it. digital units offer better value, and you can buy quite cheaply units with simultaneous use of several delay types at once.
overall a cheap digital is the best for your delay pedal. you can trade it in for something more expensive at a later date.
if you live near to a guitar shop tell them you want to try out ALL the delays in your price range. you’d be surprised how helpful most of the shopkeepers are, and they can help find what is best delay for you.
