Anyone know how I can make my jimi hendrix wah wah pedal less stiff?
When moving the pedal up and down quick it feels fine. But when making slow adjustments, it feels clunky and its hard to make small smoothe movements.
Is anyone familliar with the jimi hendrix crybaby wah wah and knows how to make it less stiff?
thanks!
From the photos I’ve seen on the web, it looks like the mechanism is identical to the one used in my Vox wah wah pedal, and my MSA volume pedal. Based on that assumption, I can give you some tips. You’ll need to remove the bottom plate to get access to the inside. The bottom should be held on by 4 screws, possibly the same ones that hold the rubber feet. Here is a photo of a different brand, but yours should look similar: http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/P2120020.jpg
Inside, you’ll easily see how the pedal mechanism works. There is a potentiometer mounted sideways with a plastic gear wheel attached to it’s stem. Attached to the movable pedal, you’ll see a straight toothed piece that meshes with the gear on the pot. As the pedal moves up and down, it turns the gear on the pot. This is most likely the source of the roughness. The straight toothed piece is pressed against the pot gear with a shim or tensioner. In the picture above, the shim is a plastic loop (actually a cord holder) which has been turned aside to allow removal of the pot. By loosening a screw, you may be able to reposition the tensioner so as to reduce the pressure between the two gears. Your pedal may have a slightly different design, but the principle will be the same: you need to play with the tensioner that presses the two gears together. While you’re at it, you may wish to spray a little lubricant on the teeth and tensioner…I would use silicone.
There are also two large screws that the pedal rocks on…one on either side. Lubricate them and adjust the tightness if necessary.
When you get the bottom off, everything I’m describing will be a little clearer….it’s much harder to describe than to do. Good luck.
