Agreement for an ice related fender bender? Should I be worried?
There was a huge literal ice patch in front of a stop sign on a road in my town. Very far away, slowing down, signal on, i very very softly tapped the back of a minivan with my subcompact. A little plastic chunk came off the front of my car, I don’t really care that much I kindof fixed it. He had a few scratches on his rear bumper. I immediately put my flashers on and went up to talk to him. Him and his passenger as well as mine were obviously unhurt. I apologized immediately, told him there wasnt much damage. He came out to inspect and said yeah theres not enough to call. He said yeah my traction control went on, and slipped a little while we were talking, jokingly commenting on the crazy ice. We didnt talk name, police, insurance, or license plate numbers. We got back in our cars after shaking hands and drove away.
Will anything come of this? I didnt see him write down or even get enough time to ever see the model make of my car, or license plate number, and we were both nice.
assuming the other party is not a kid (age 16-21 or so) nor elderly (over age 65 or so), i’m willing to bet that he or his passenger *did* write down or memorize your license plate #….
here’s my 2 schools of thought:
if i were your risk management advisor, i’d advise you to call your insurance company asap and report the incident, stating exactly what happened – including that the other party stated “there’s not enough (damage) to call” – and that he didn’t ask for any info nor give you any. that way, if he does call, you’ll be in the clear…
however, if i were your friend who happened to be a risk management advisor and i wasn’t *your* risk management advisor, lol, i’d say just let it slide (pardon the pun)…..seeing as the guy was as friendly as he was, and the damage was minor, he probably won’t report it….
if he does, and your insurance company contacts you, again, i’d simply tell them what happened, including that the other party said “there’s not enough (damage) to call” – and that he didn’t ask for any info nor give you any. they’ll most likely not cancel your policy anyway – unless you have more than one other accident or moving violation on your record within the past 3yrs.
