What’s better a combo guitar amp or a stack? What are the pros and cons?
Money is not a big deal, I just want something that I’ll be happy with for a long time.
Are stacks really just meant for playing big shows? If I don’t get to play it at higher volumes very much, is it going to be frustrating to own one? Would it be like owning a Ferrari and using it mainly as a daily driver?There really is no such thing as “better,” it’s all preference. But, I can try to give you a little run down…
STACKS: A “Stack” is any set-up where you have a separate amplifier unit, connected to seperate speaker cabinet.
PROS: Stacks are great because you can mix and match different amplifier heads and speaker cabs. This gives you a lot of versatility in speaker sounds. Also, most speaker cabs that you would use with a head are usually 4×12″, so they are great for playing live. Head units usually have an emphasis on good distortions as well. And because you are buying them separately, you can have a better choice in quality of amp and speakers.
CONS: $$$ a nice head can cost upwards of $1500 and a decent cab can be around $1000 and up. Also, stacks are a pain to set-up and tear down. Very few heads, in my opinion, have really great clean tones. Even fewer have really great reverb. As a result, with the exception of some Mesas, or other “boutique” heads, your typical head is not going to be very versatile in terms of its tones.COMBO: A “combo” is a unit that has a specific amplifier unit and speaker configuration built in together.
PROS: Combo amps have A LOT of character. Amps like the Fender Twin Reverb, the Vox AC30 and the Roland Jazz-Chorus are constantly sought for their unique tones. Combos also tend to have better clean tones and superior reverb and tremolo. Price is also a winner. With $1000 and a guitar cable, you’re ready to play on a very fine amp. Not so with stacks…you’re gonna need a couple thousand more!
CONS: Speaker configuration…you get what you get. Not a whole let of mixing and matching here. You can’t have the AC30 with 4×10″ unless YOU do some serious re-wiring. Also, most combos (except for the Mesa’s!) don’t have unbelievable distortion, or the presence of a 4×12″ config. Also you don’t really get to choose the quality of the speakers…the amp comes with what it comes with. Some companies DO have options though!no matter what you choose, I would suggest a TUBE AMPLIFIER. They have better tone, and they are the real deal.
