What are the drawbacks of a cheap classical guitar ?
In theory and practise. For example the wood it is made of and how much it affects the sounding. As for all the rest, I have no clue about!
Chris, the low-end Classic Guitars manufactured by Yamaha are of remarkable quality and will serve the student guitarist well over the short term.
The proportions and standard bracing of the classic guitar are largely standardized and except for the difference in wood quality, finish, and fit, will sound just fine. The top of the instrument (the soundboard) is the most critical item and should be made of Spruce or Cedar, straight grained.
Distinctive woods and advanced bracing designs can all wait until the student has demonstrated proficiency on the learning instrument. Then a high-quality Classic Guitar may with confidence be purchased as advance studies are pursued.
I have several classic guitars in my instrument collection and recently purchased a tacky, garish wood grained little-known brand of guitar at a pawn shop. I had it refinished, the tuning mechanism adjusted to my preferences, cleaned, polished, and it plays great. Because it is a cheapy I was bold enough to have several Sound Ports drilled into the upper bout to enhance the otherwise locked-up sound in these areas. I don’t use it for public performance, but it is a fine at-home practice instrument. Naturally, it doesn’t compare in sound production with my concert instrument, (to which I added similar Sound Ports) but for the price, and its purpose, I am well satisfied.
So, do not hesitate to purchase an inexpensive Classic Guitar for study purposes…It will work out fine. Good luck you in this pursuit.
