Why are my pictures all off center?
Hi. I’m using a Kodak M753 Digital Camera, and I took loads of pictures recently during a City break. I am a perfectionist, and made sure when i took the pictures they were really straight. Even when i reviewed them on the small LCD screen they looked really straight. But i’ve just uploaded them to my computer, and they are all slightly off center, which made me blush, and feel really angry! Should I buy a DS-LR Camera? Or am I doing something wrong?
Obviously there is a problem with the alignment somewhere in your camera. It may also be that Kodak left some extra margin in so that those who are not so meticulous and attentive can fix an ocean that’s “running downhill.”
Can you crop out the offending area, or is the image just plain off-center to the left or right? You may have a warranty issue there.
To test for this, make a target chart on posterboard with a rectangle the same proportions as the aspect ratio of your camera with diagonal and square lines from corner to corner and vertical and horizontal axes. Zoom in to fill the frame of the OPTICAL viewfinder (if it has one) and look at the LCD. Do they match, or is it off? If your camera doesn’t have an optical viewfinder then do the same with the LCD and download the image to your computer and examine it there.
I once had a Nikon that I thought I loved until I began to notice that it had more horizontal “headroom” and was simultaneously clipping off the bottom. Later, I bought a Pentax and discovered it had a much larger- and brighter-appearing viewfinder that was properly aligned. It made a world of difference.
It just shows to go you that you have to run a complete test series on any new camera. Even ones straight out of the box from top brands can be dogs.
