So I just bought a La Patrie Presentation (classical) guitar. Do you know anything about them?
Basically I bought it, and I’m trying to do some research on it now. On my receipt it says that it is a La Patrie Presentation: Classical solid cedar top, mahogany body.
This confuses me. I looked at the La Patrie website and it says the Presentation line is supposed to be rosewood. Mine is mahogany.. So it sounds more like the Etude to me.
Is there a big difference between rosewood and mahogany?
Also.. There is no glossy finish. I would call it almost a matt finish. Is that good or bad?While I’m at it.. I noticed the bottom three strings are worn and look black where it meets the fret. Does that mean I need new strings?
You might want to check with the company because Musician’s Friend web site show it to have a rosewood (plywood) back and sides. There is a big difference; rosewood is a warmer wood with more bass emphasis while mahogany is a brighter wood that has a punchier midrange. Hovewer cedar is a very warm top so the mahogany is if anything a better choice. Matte finishes are less expensive than glossy finishes, which keeps down the cost of the guitar. It protects the wood just as well.
It can’t hurt to replace the strings.
