Does your DSL modem hardware have any effect on traffic throttling / shaping?
I had an ancient Efficient Networks Speedstream 5260, which Bell has now replaced with a newer (and much smaller) Siemens Speedstream 4200.
I’m not sure why they replaced my hardware, I did have brief line troubles which were resolved over the phone in a few minutes a few weeks ago, then a box arrived with the new modem.
Anyway, the new modem is fine. Seems a little slower to connect on re-boot. My line speeds are about the same, but certain activities, like accessing a large file from my home server from a remote location seems to be capped at around 20-30 kbps.
So, does any of the traffic shaping or packet-inspection take place locally using my modem? Or does it all happen on the ISP side, and any difference is either co-incidence or my imagination?
