guitar effect pedal help?
I have around 300 dollars and no effect pedals what so ever. I have played tons of different pedals like the digitech and boss pedals, also the dunlop crybaby. but right now i have no pedals, i have a peavey windsor amp and a epiphone les paul goldtop guitar. I play blues, southern rock, and metal like metallica, slayer, and black label society. What are some good pedals i could get? like distortion pedals, wah pedals, just effects in general.
NEVER EVER get a cheap (under $400.00 new) multi fx. Sounds like crap.
Get a used Fulltone Fulldrive 2 w/ Mosfet for ~$130.00 to cover your overdrive, a used Crybaby 535Q for ~$95.00ish, and then a ProCo Rat 2 used for ~$90.00. Covers Wah, most Distortion, and all Overdrives and light Distortion.
Sauls suggestions of the Metalzone and Metalcore are horrible. They are shrill on quite a few amp settings, and they get so muddy so quickly notes become indistiguishable. Not very versatile, at all. They come with horrible stock parts. They might be built like a tank, but thats about all they have going for them. ProCo Rats might be mass built, but they sound great. They have, in my mind, helped define what a pedals distortion should sound like. Replace the Op-Amp with a LM308, and it gets even better. Or, a Emma Reezafratzitz. Really, listen to some demos online and see what you like. Distortion comes in so many flavours…
The Boss CH-1 is also a horrible suggestion. Roland may have developed the chorus sound, but that doesn’t mean they are the best. Look for a used analogman mini chorus, a Ibanez CS-9, or even a Danelectro DC-1. All better than the Boss CH-1… If you must go Boss, get a older Boss CE-3 or a Boss DC-2. Both sound better than the CH-1, which is digital and sterile. It is not analog.
As far as Phase Shifters go… Small Stones and Phase 90′s are good options… The Soundblox Tri-Modulation Phaser is nice as well. You can mess with the resonance and change the stages from 6 to 12, I believe. It has a rate potentiometer, as well as depth and brightness. If you want to get something a bit nicer, try a Blackout Effectors Whetstone Phaser, or even a Moogerfooger.
Fuzz? Look into Monsterpiece fuzzes. The NPN is the most versatile, and it uses silicon transistors stock. Handmade, high quality.
Wahs? Crybaby 535Q is very adjustable… But the Teese Real McCoy 3… Thats a dream to mess with. You can control every single parameter. Don’t go for the ones with peoples names on them. They all sound fairly similar in the end, and you can change the sweep to a extent anyways. Whatever pedal you do end up getting, purchase a Whipple handwound inductor off of Ebay and install that. Sounds great.
The Overdrive pedal I suggested, Fulltone Fulldrive 2 w/ Mosfet, is very nice. It has a toggleable boost, as well as a toggle between Mosfet and regular on the boost to add more gain and low end. You can choose between flat mids or a more tubescreamer like sound, and then change the amount of gain, volume and tone.
Delays? Look for a used Carbon Copy, or a Line 6 DL4. Both great sounding and widely available.
Graphic EQ’s? Try getting a Parametric EQ instead of a Graphic EQ. It is easier to tweak with, and you can still get great sounds out of it. Or, a Danelectro Fish N Chips…
Pitchshifting? Look into the Micro Pog, Octave Multiplexer… Both good for getting a faux bass sound or some cool, experimental sounds into your playing.
Reverb? Look into a Tech 21 Boost RVB. Highly tweakable, highly recommended by me.
Wait… Want a pedalboard? Go to your local Ikea and buy one of their Gorm Shelves for $3.00. Throw some velcro on it, and it makes a great pedalboard. I have two of them! Very sturdy.
Also, look into new pickups for your Epiphone. I recommend the Mean 90′s. store.guitarfetish.com
