What’s the process of finishing the exterior of a bass guitar?
I’m going to be building a custom bass, and I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I’m doing except for the last part, which would be finishing the exterior of the bass. I’m going to get an unfinished jazz bass body made of Swamp Ash, and I really would like to showcase the wood. This means I don’t plan on painting it. What would be the most simplified process of making it pretty professional looking? I was thinking something along the line of staining the wood, then some clear coats. I’d appreciate if any of you could give me more direction and info on how to do this. Thanks for any help!
I would get a professional to do this part of the build for you if you don’t have any previous experience with (re)finishing a guitar of any sort. One mistake and you’ll seriously mess up your bass. I’m partial to a Sunburst finish myself, I think its a classic look for any instrument. Good luck with your build and I hope your bass gives you many years of happy jamming.
