What kind of guitar amp is better for a distortion pedal?
I own a Les Paul Standard and mostly play hard rock and blues. I have a peavy and a crate amp, both with overdrive and clean channels. I recently bought a distortion pedal and my question is: Would it be better to play with the distortion pedal through a clean channel or purchase an amp without overdrive in order to use the pedal? Does it make a difference?
Well, your question has an answer of both opinion and quality. I have several amps with distortion. Personally, I love my Marshall and Line 6 distortion on the amps. I have a Crate, Fender and Peavy, and am not thrilled with theirs. There are a few things that can help shape your sound other than the amp. Speaker size, pickup used, cabinet build, and what your own preferences are.
If you don’t use many effects, sometimes its best to use an amps distortion if you like it. Its also easy. Pedals can have a great tailored sound and you can take that sound to any amp you play on. Bottom line is that you need to find the sound that is right for you, no matter which amp, or which pedal manufacturer.
And if you go for an amp, you may want to get one with 3 channels (lead channel) or get a line boost. If you solo, it will help you cut through the mix in a band setting.
