How to respray a bass guitar?
Hi all, i’m doing up my bass guitar and i’m a bit bored of the colour. It’s black at the moment but i want to paint it white. I was wondering if i needed to strip the old paint off first or just paint over it with a base paint and then paint it white? Please help!

You will have to sand off the present finish back to bare wood. FIne grit sandpaper. No power tools. If you are going to a darker color you might not need to get all the old color off, but you would have to match the type of paint. Since you are going from black to white, you will need to remove all the old color from the guitar. That takes a lot of effort and time.
To repaint your guitar, you can use either lacquer or urethane based paints. If you removed all the old finish, you are free to choose either. If some of the old finish was not removed, you must match the new with the old. Lacquer on lacquer or urethane on urethane. Auto paints are great. That is what guitars were painted with in the 50s and 60s. You can get those at any auto parts store. For best results you need an air compressor and paint spray gun. If you do not have those, you can use spray cans. Hard to get a great job with a spray can, but it has been done. Work slow. Thin coats of color. Sand between coats (400 grit). Lay down several color coats. Then repeat the process using a clear coat. Remember to match your clear coat to your color coats. If you used lacquer for the color use lacquer for the clear coats. If you used urethane for the color, use urethane for the clear coats.
If you know anyone who does custom painting of cars or bikes, you should try to get them to help you. The same equipment. Same painting process.
