Questions about passive pickups on my bass guitar?
I’m currently looking to buy a new electric bass guitar. The one I am looking at has active pickups, which means it has a pre amp. Does that mean it can play aloud without an amp? Also, if I the 9-volt battery for it is dead will it just play without the pre amp?
So would you recommend a bass with a pre amp?No – you can’t really play active pickups without and amp. There is no preamp in the guitar they are just powered pickups which provide a better guitar signal to the amplifier. When your battery is dead, the signal is going to be interrupted so, you do need batteries to play that bass. Therefore, it’s a really good idea to include a package of batteries inside your guitar case just in case you need them. I have an Ibanez SR505 5-string bass with active pickups and the pickups do provide a little more punch to the bass signal. The batteries seem to last a long time and I have not had any problems with the pickups or the bass. Occasionally I will plug it in and it’s not working which is an indication that it’s time to replace the batteries. I just keep a package of about a dozen batteries in my case. When I’m down to just a few left, I buy another package. No big deal. I love that Ibanez bass however and have been very happy with the sound.
