Did anybody make fake Gibson Rippers?
I have a Ripper that I bought back in august, the person who sold it to me said it was a Gibson Luthier’s bass that he built fpr himself while he worked at the factory back in the 70′s…the bass has no serial number, the truss rod cover says Custom, and is held on by 3 screws. The logo on the headstock looks 100% authentic. The neck is a bolt on, and the strap pin is on the neck plate…there is no hole drilled on the horn. The bridge looks identical to other rippers, but the string thru part looks different, there is no recessed part on the back like on others I’ve seen. The pickups look and sound 100% authentic compared with other rippers I’ve seen and played. The bass plays great, feels right overall, I’m just curious if anybody is or was making fakes of these basses, or if its possible that the luthier story checks out?
First:In my opinion Gibson never made any good Basses. Its possible he made this on his own time if he worked at the factory. Gibson (I think) fused their necks with glue and not bolts. If it was made by Gibson there should be a serial number on it. If you like it that’s all that matters.
