How to play Bass Guitar?
I’ve been playing the guitar for years now, and I’m pretty good at it, with hammer-ons, pull-ups, slides, etc. I can do fast switches, read tabs, and memorize them easy. Though I was asked to play for a gig as a Bass player, I hesitatedly agreed. Now this gig is coming in on one week from now, and I need to learn how to play the bass fast, since I’m really confused with it, than I am on a guitar, also I can’t back down now.
I’ve been looking onto sites, and videos, still can’t understand it. Does Bass have chords like a guitar? What are beats? More? And such.
Yikes. First, bass mainly does not have chords. The easiest way to play bass if you are familiar with guitar is to look at the chord and play the root note of the chord on the bass. The strings on the bass are the same notes as the lower 4 strings on a guitar (E A D G). So, if the guitar chord in the song is C, then play a C in the bass by putting your finger on the 3rd fret of the A string. Depending on song, you might just play one note per measure (only pluck on the first beat of the measure), you may play quarter notes (pluck once per beat if the song), or you might play eighth notes (pluck on every downbeat and upbeat). If a chord is written with a dominant bass note (example D/F#) then you would play the note after the / on the base (F# my example). You can play around within that a bit and throw in some additional transitional notes as long as they are in the chord and the key the song is in, but I think you better keep it simple for now.
Don’t take this negatively, but this really points out the difference between being able to read tabs and play notes on the guitar and actually learning to play and understand music and apply that to the guitar (or any other instrument). It sounds like you have the ability but could use some lessons.
