My husband threw away a brown paper bag with savings bonds in it. What can I do 2 retrieve them? Who to call?
He thought the bag was trash! I have all our childrens savings bonds, ours from work, AND to top it off…..the registry book where I had them all recorded WAS IN THE BAG that he put out for trash pick up day! That was about 10 years ago, but something has trigered me to ask this question…Can anyone suggest what I can do to go about retrieving them/their value, etc.??? Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t ask this question a LONG time ago! Thank you very very much in advance. Ugh!!
I know the originals are GONE, but what I want to know is….Is there a main office where they are recorded that I can call to get that information? Can they be retrieved via that information? Has anyone ever lost bonds like this, and what did you do to find their information so you could cash them in (of course with proof that they are yours)? Any help would be wonderful! I hope I’m explaining this clearly. Thank you.If you know the social security numbers that were on the bond the Treasury Department may be able to trace them. Here is what I found on the Treasury Direct web site when I searched for lost bonds.
Public Debt will also expedite the replacement of paper bonds lost or destroyed. Bond owners should complete form PD F-1048, available at most financial institutions or by writing to Customer Service Department, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, 90 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55401-1804, phone (800) 553-2663. This form can also be downloaded from Public Debt’s website, www.treasurydirect.gov. Bond owners should include as much information as possible about the lost bonds on the form. This information should include how the bonds were inscribed, Social Security number, approximate dates of issue, bond denominations and serial numbers, if available. A notary public or an officer of a financial institution must certify the completed form. Completed forms should be forwarded to Public Debt’s Office of Retail Securities, 200 Third Street, Parkersburg, WV 26106-7012. Bond owners should write the word “DISASTER” on the front of their envelopes to help expedite the processing of claims.
