what are the best strings for an old acoustic archtop guitar from the 1930′s? regular acoustic or jazz elect
First it is a matter of sound preference. Acoustic strings tend to be bronze while electric are nickel. There are other options out like stainless steel and gold – each providing a different sound and preference.
Aside from tonal preference, an archtop (especially a vintage model) requires a certain amount of tension to play properly. You should probable at a minimum go with 11 guage with a wound third and could probably go as high as 13 guage. Each string adjustment will require a setup on the guitar to maintain optimum playability.
I play archtop and acoustic and have switched many times, but I have settled on bronze (or phosphorous bronze) wound 12 guage for the acoustic (my brand is Martin Marquis) – and 11 guage (with wound third) nickle wound for archtops (my brand is D’Addario).
Thicker strings generally give a little better tone at the sacrifice of playability.
Ultimately it is a preference.
