Recommended 12AX7 tube (valve) for a Hartke 3500 head?
I am looking to swap out the stock Sovtek but was looking for some opinions on the matter. I play a Hartke 3500 (hybrid tube/solid state). It uses a stock 12AX7 in the preamp.
I play through a Ampeg SVT 410HLF cab so any tube that may assist in getting closer to that Classic SVT all-tube tone would be awesome ( I know I am dreaming).
Anyways, I play mostly with a pick. I like Carlos Dengler (Interpol), Peter Hook, Simon Gallop and Andy Rourke (The Smiths).
The purpose of a tube preamp is to mess with the signal as little as possible while amplifying it to a range where you can modify it in pleasing ways. It uses the tube in the flattest part of its operating envelope. Any decently made tube like the Sovtek, not prone to introducing microphonics due to mechanical defects, should sound the same as any other – your sound characteristics come mainly in the output stage tubes, which get used in a very nonlinear fashion. That said, your individual ears are the only true judge of the sound you want. For an example of about as different a tube as you can find within the 12ax7 parameters, try a chinese tube, but make sure by tapping on it while it is operating that it’s not giving you microphonics. If you don’t hear a difference between those two, don’t bother trying any others.
