You’re buying a brand new Fender American Standard Stratocaster. Do you choose a Maple or Rosewood fretboard?

Hello! Actually, the choice of fretboard material comes down to several issues. First, the maple fretboard is going to sound a little brighter than the rosewood counterpart. Next, over time you will see little wear marks appearing under the strings of a maple fretboard; some consider this a badge of honor, some think it detracts from the appearance. The wear marks will be invisible on the rosewood. Still, to me there is nothing that screams Stratocaster more than a Sunburst-finished body matched with a maple fretboard, which is what I have with my 1957 Re-Issue. My American Standard is red with the rosewood fretboard, and it too is very striking. In terms of which fretboard plays easier, I would have to say the rosewood is slightly faster. I find that the lacquered-finish on the maple model tends to be somewhat sticky at times. Try playing each, and see what you think. Finally, I wouldn’t get too concerned in regards to the durability aspect, as both necks are pretty bullet-proof. By the way, I sure would like to know where HHNF encountered the Stratocaster-chomping alligator, so I make sure to stay far away from that place! Best regards, Dana
